Elections in Nigeria are like time bomb, Ace Broadcaster declares

Ace Broadcast Journalist and one time General Manager of Delta Broadcasting Service, Warri, Mr. Eric James says elections in Nigeria are like time bomb due to the tension it often comes with.

Mr. Eric James who was speaking at a seminar organized by the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, DSIEC in conjunction with Delta State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalist at Asaba hinged his assertion on incidences in past elections conducted in Nigeria as well as his experience as media manager.

He advised journalists to always report elections objectively as defenders of the peoples’ right.

The former DBS Warri Boss while speaking on the topic “the role of the Media in the conduct of political elections”, stated that political elections are usually characterized with tensions, hence the contenders always leaving no stone unturned in order to get victory at all cost.

According to Mr. James, media organizations should give equal opportunities to all aspirants irrespective of political parties, even as he observed that covering elections in Nigeria is a dangerous assignment for journalists.

He opined that only experienced and well informed journalists should be assigned to cover elections in the country considering the complexities involved.

In his key-note address, Chairman of Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, DSIEC, Mr. Moses Akpoyoma Ogbe averred that the commission will welcome developmental and constructive journalism, stressing that such report can only improve the commission’s activities.

Mr. Ogbe explained that the purpose of the seminar was to sensitize journalists on how to handle election reportage that will lead to non-violence as well as use their medium to sensitize and educate people of the grassroots on how to vote in the October 25, 2014 Local Government polls to be conducted by the Commission.

Another resource person at the seminar who is a lecturer in Mass Communication Department, University of Nigeria, Nsuka, Edith Ohaja opined that a free and fair election is one devoid of rancor.

In his remark, Chairman of Delta State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalist, Comrade Norbert Chiazor commended journalists that attended the seminar and enjoined them to abide by the ethics of journalism profession in their reportage.
