Man who stole car from church premises remanded in prison


A 20-year old man, Emmanuel Ejemudaro , who stole a car belonging to a fellow worshipper at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Jakpa Road , in Effurun,  Delta State has been remanded in prison custody by an Effurun  Magistrate’s Court .

The Toyota Camry with registration number, KPE 387AA, belonging to one Mrs. Treasure Efemiemie was reportedly stolen from where it was parked at the church premises.

It was learnt that the car thief had trailed his victim to the church and sat beside her, while the church service was on. According to report, the young man picked the keys kept inside the woman’s bible when she went to the altar for an altar call.

On getting back to her seat, the car keys had disappeared. She promptly reported to the ushers who went to the place where she had parked the car but the car was nowhere to be found. The case was subsequently reported to the police.

A video recorded in the course of the church service was then played and used to identify the car thief’’, a church member said the prosecutor, Corporal Isreal Omugbe revealed to the court that Efemudaro told the police he had the intention of selling the vehicle for N250, 000 before the car somersaulted on his way to Sapele and was kept at the workshop of the second and third accused persons, the mechanic and panel beater respectively.

It was gathered that a buyer who was contacted and insisted on having the original vehicle particulars, Emmanuel took him to his house only to raise a false alarm that he was a thief  which led to him  being beating to a pulp and dispossessed of N100,000 by a mob. The buyer had gone to report a case of assault to the police which led to the arrest of the car thief.

The Magistrate of Court 4 Effurun, Magistrate, G. O. Jaho-Inweh (Mrs.) reading charge No ME /243/C/2014 said “that you Emmanuel Ejemudaro ‘m’ Sunday Udoh ‘m’ (36) and Romarua Akpode ‘m’ (38) on 19th of October 2014, at the Effurun Magisterial District did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit stealing and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 516 (21) vol.1 laws of Delta State of Nigeria 2006”.

The three accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges. The mechanic and the panel beater were, however, granted   bail in the sum of N100, 000with a surety in like sum, while Ejemudaro was remanded in prison custody for failure to meet his bail conditions till the next adjourned date of November 11, 2014.
