NDIOPC writes Chevron, demands removal of the company’s facilities from Dibi, Olero, Abiteye Fields, over perceived deceitful promises

An indigenous group in Delta State, the Niger Delta Itsekiri Oil Producing Communities, NDIOPC, has written oil and gas major, Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, asking the company to as a matter of urgency, remove all its facilities from Olero, Dibi and Abiteye Fields, due to perceived “prolonged deceitful promises” made by Chevron.

Our Senior Correspondent reports that the NDIOPC, which represents over 15 different Itsekiri communities, said they have been peaceful host to CNL, unlike their neighbours, warning the company not to take their hospitality for granted, saying failure to quickly respond to their demand, will attract consequences.

In the letter dated December 13, 2021 and made available to Fresh Angle International, Wednesday January 12, 2022, NDIOPC accused officials of the multinational oil and gas company of giving out jobs meant for indigenous contractors to their proxies, as against the MoU signed in 2002.

According to them, Chevron Nigeria Limited, has refused to employ qualified Itsekiri graduates, after passing through the necessary training at Ogere, failed to connect electricity to their communities and provide basic healthcare facilities as well as proper funding from the existing GMoU.

The letter, signed by Raymond Aderejor, Austin Dorsu and Austin Kpogho, among others, reads in part: “We are tired of the activities of your company on our lands, our lands are no longer fertile, your activities have destroyed all our ecological gains during the crisis in 1996 and 2003, when your company’s activities was put on hold. Our people planted and fished on their lands and got good harvest, but your company has completely destroyed all that gain as food no longer grow on our lands and fishes are dying in their numbers.

"We are now ready to take our destiny in our hands. Should you refuse our demand, we shall ensure that your business and operations, will no longer be peaceful within and around our communities, as the proceeds of crude oil wealth from our communities don't reflect in the development of our communities, both human and capital".

Meanwhile, another group, Bush Boys, have backed the agitation of NDIOPC, insisting people of Olero, Dibi and Abiteye Fields, will no longer continue to live without electricity as hosts of Chevron Nigeria Limited.

Coordinator of Bush Boys, Godwin Bobi, urged CNL to swiftly respond to the demands of NDIOPC, in order to have peaceful operations.
