Yaya Toure:
Crowning him the current African footballer of the year is a perfect reflection of this Ivorian born, Manchester City midfield engine room. Anyone who watched the epic last day encounter between Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers will attest to the fact that but for the extra skill and determination of the maverick Mario Balloteli and Sergio Kun Aguero, the injury forced exit of Yaya Toure in that game would have caused City the title as his removal immediately left a big hole at Manchester City’s midfield.Yaya’s African Nation’s Cup sojourn caused City a heavy dip in form and was the period City dropped many points in their quest for the EPL title. This former Barcelona defensive midfielder has since added creativity, pace and killer strikes to his game since joining Manchester City.
His contributions to City’s success qualifies him as EPL player of the season
Demba Ba:
This Senegalese born centre forward is not just a clinical finisher, but an all round team player gifted with skill, strength and aerial power. Despite his seeming outshine by fellow country man, Papiss Demba Cisse, the former WestHam goal getter must take all the credit for Allan Pardew’s Newcastle qualification for a place in next season’s UEFA Europa league. Little wonder, London giant, Chelsea is reportedly eyeing him as replacement for Ivorian captain, Didier Drogba.
Gareth Bale:
The story of TottenHam Hotspur in the just concluded 2011/2012 soccer season cannot be told without the mention of Gareth Bale. There were even reports that the immediate past Barcelona gaffer , Josep Guardiola eyed him for a possible switch to the Camp Nou. Bale’s extreme speed, skill and all round team play caused defenders and opposing midfielders all over Europe a nightmare. It won’t be a surprise if one of Europe’s bigger teams snatch him during the summer.
Ramires:
Despite shaky start to his Chelsea career, this Brazillian born former Benfica midfielder has since caught the eye of many soccer followers around the world with his dazzling performances for current English FA cup winners, Chelsea. He is no doubt a big miss for Chelsea in the UEFA Champions league final, naming Juan Mata Chelsea’s player of the season instead of Ramires is definitely a judgement in error. Ramires combines industry, skill and clinical play to his team contributions, thus justifying his big money transfer from Benfica. Any EPL team of the season that leaves out Ramires in the right side of midfield and Gareth Bale on the left side will be incorrect. He is by miles the most improved foreign player in the EPL.
Wayne Rooney :
Wayne needs no introduction. Apart from being one of the strikers to watch out for in the forthcoming EURO 2012, Wayne Rooney’s work-rate, deft touches, great technic and tireless contributions made the average looking Manchester United took the EPL title race to the wire.
The secret of Rooney’s improved performance is the out-growing of his earlier youthful exuberance which saw him picking cards at the start of his career. He is a very good example for Mario Balloteli to learn from if he intends to maximize his God given talent with a little less hype by English press. Wayne Rooney’s improved work-rate can only place him after Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo.
Robin Van Persie:
It remains to be seen if Arsenal can keep Robin Van Persie in the summer after such a splendid season that saw him being crowned EPL player of the season. Save for nagging injuries in previous seasons, RVP would by now be ranking shoulders with the world best strikers. Apart from playing as top striker, RVP can operate from the wings or play as support striker as he did during the days of Thiery Henry and Emmanuel Adebayor at the gunners. He is quick , skillful, strong, aerially good and a natural goal scorer.
