Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Ewetan Uduaghan has revealed that the abandoned state of Ogbe-Ijoh market in Warri South local government is as a result of opposition politics played by the Director assigned to oversee the completion of the market.
According to Dr. Uduaghan, it was the same person who was in charge of Udu market construction. The Governor who was silent on the identity of the politician assigned to oversee the construction of both markets, noted that he is determined to “as much as possible reduce ethnic hatred so that ethnicity do not take us to the Rwanda situation.”
Dr. Uduaghan who dropped the hint while playing host to members of Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, ACNPN, Delta State Chapter at government house, Asaba Wednesday May 30, disclosed that payment of compensation to property owners is delaying the Deco – Okumagba avenue dualisation Project in Warri. A project which Fresh Angle gathered was awarded to Niger Cat Construction Company with full mobilization but with nothing on ground as at press time.
While noting that his administration is looking at making the state owned Direct Labour Agency, DLA, a road maintenance agency rather than carrying out construction, Governor Uduaghan explained that his administration is not against criticism but that it should be done without ethnic sentiment.
The Governor who was silent on ACNPN’s request for official vehicle and secretariat in Asaba, expressed believe in community newspapers and tasked publishers of community newspapers to ensure that its reports are truthful on both the side of government as well as the people.
On the prolonged delay in the conduct of local government polls, Dr. Uduaghan blamed it on the non constitution of Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, DSIEC, which according to him is not unconnected with senatorial representations.
He disclosed that his administration is exploring the possibility of amending the act which makes it mandatory for the chairman of the commission to be a retired judge so as to remove that clause. While promising that in the next few months he will conduct local government polls, the governor disclosed that a committee has been set up to look into the composition of board members.
