Some medical practitioners in Delta State have posited that the way forward for the prevention of malaria and HIV/AIDS respectively is through the use of insecticide treated nets, ensuring cleaner environment as well as the use of condom and total abstinence from sex by those who are not married.
This advice was given recently in Warri at a one day workshop organized by a non governmental organization, Global Women for Sustainable Development in conjunction with Society for Family Health and Civil Society on Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition.
Speaking on the topic, malaria prevention, treatment and control, one of the resource persons who identified himself as Mr. Miracle, noted that the fight against malaria should not be left in the hands of Health Workers, adding that it is the collective responsibility of all through proper advocacy against malaria.
According to him, measures to help prevent malaria include the use of insecticide treated nets and keeping our environment clean at all times.
The Director of Malaria Programme in Delta State, Dr. Akporere Francis Onojeta said the reason why the free maternal programme of Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has not achieved its desired result is because the local government chairmen have not keyed into the programme . He used the medium to call on all local government chairmen or Heads of Personnel Management to identify with the agenda of the free maternal programme of the governor.
Dr. Onojeta, who answered questions on community issues as it relates to health and malaria, said it is proper for everyone to keep the environment in good hygienic condition and to stop the abuse of drugs.
Speaking on HIV and AIDS, Mrs. Ukpebitere Ese advised participants at the workshop to keep total abstinence from sex and be faithful to their partner, stressing that it is the only way one can prevent the infection and spread of HIV/AIDS.
The Executive Director, Development Initiative for Community, Mrs. Rachael Missan-Ruppee advised those who cannot abstain from sex, mothers who are spacing children and those who are cannot hold themselves, to prevent HIV/AIDS with the use of condom. She said what the condom does is to prevent infections, apart from unwanted pregnancies. She also demonstrated before the participants on how to use the female condom for safer and pleasant sex.
