Agbassa, Ekurede Urhobo youths stop demolition of shanties in Warri
Demolition of shanties & caravans beside Isibovwe Primary School fence by a combined team of Delta State & Warri South local governments

Violence was on Saturday June 30 averted in Warri, when a combined team of Delta State Commissioners, civil policemen and officials of Warri South local government council were stopped from demolishing shanties and caravans defacing Warri Sapele and Ogunu roads in Warri, Delta State.

Fresh Angle Correspondent who monitored the exercise which was carried out as part of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, reports that as soon as youths from Agbassa area noticed the demolition of shanties and caravans at Warri Sapele road by Bowen Avenue round about, they came out in tens and resisted further demolition along the Agbassa area of Warri Sapele road. The youths who apparently read ethnic colouration to the exercise, accused the state government of not providing jobs for them, yet destroying their means of livelihood.

In a bid to avert a breakdown of law and order, the combine team led by the Delta State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Frank Omare proceeded to other areas to continue the demolition.

Fresh Angle gathered that the Agbassa youths later damaged some tippers hired by authorities of Warri South local government council after the commissioner and his team had left their area.

Mr. Frank Omare, the State Commissioner of Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, the chairman of Delta State Waste Management Board, Chief Olori Magege and authorities of Warri South local government council also met resistance at Ogunu road when a former House of Assembly aspirant, Chief Vincent Okudolor interrupted the demolition exercise on the premise that owners of the shanties and caravans beside Isibovwe Primary School were not given prior notice to evacuate their wares.

Chief Okudolor who spoke to Fresh Angle in an exclusive phone interview, dispelled insinuations that his action has any internal revenue generation interest and tasked the combined team to work towards clearing blocked drains, rather than destroying the people’s means of livelihood.

The State Commissioner of Environment, Mr. Frank Omare who later spoke to newsmen after the exercise, explained that it has no ethnic colouration and noted that the state government is determined to clear all natural drains in the next two weeks to avoid flood in the twin cities of Warri and Effurun.

Other areas where illegal structures built around school fences were destroyed include Hussey College by Lower Erejuwa, Ikengbuwa Primary School, Ajamimogha as well as Yonwuren College and Agbeje Primary School in Ugbuwangue.
