Minister Assures: Chevron GMoU, OMoU will bring sustainable development to Niger Delta

The Minister of State, Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Prof. Claudius Daramola has described the signing of fresh Global Memorandum of Understanding, GMoU and the Offshore Memorandum of Understanding, OMoU between the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture and the Egbema Gbaramatu Communities’ Development Foundation, EGCDF, ILaje Regional Development Committee, ILRDC, Actual Indigenous, Core, Eight Limited Concessional, Ultimate, Major Oil blocs, AICECUM Communities as well as the government of Delta and Ondo States, as another great achievement capable of bringing sustainable development to the Niger Delta people.

Our Senior Correspondent reports that the Minister made the assertion in Warri, Delta State on Wednesday March 23 during the signing of renewed GMoU, OMoU and AICECUM courtesy of the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture.

Prof. Daramola opined that previous administrations made individuals rich and powerful to the detriment of the communities, but assured that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration will bring wealth to the communities of Niger Delta rather than a few individuals.

He commended Chevron for implementing the GMoU, OMoU and other agreements entered into with its host communities.

Earlier in his remark, the General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, PGPA Chevron Nigeria Limited, Mr. Deji Haastrup insisted that for 10 years (between 2005 and 2015) Chevron and its NNPC Joint Venture partner spent about N17billion for the development of its host communities through the Global Memorandum of Understanding, GMoU as well as awarded over 40, 000 scholarships to students and built several infrastructural projects across the 8 RDCs.

He assured that the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture will continue to fund the GMoU entered with host communities with a view to building the capacity of the people and ensuring co-ordinated development.

The Chevron PGPA Boss lauded the achievement of the Chief Michael Johnny led leadership of Egbema Gbaramatu Communities’ Development Foundation, listing their achievements to include shore protection project, solar power projects, health care and construction of jetties.

He also commended Ilaje Regional Development Committee for being peaceful and sustaining human capital projects in their area.

In his remark, Chairman of EGCDF, Chief Michael Johnny described the signing of the renewed GMoU and OMoU agreements as a milestone achievement and appealed to the three tiers of government as well as non-governmental organizations to assist the foundation in completing the two cottage hospitals embarked upon by his leadership.

On his part, Chairman of Ilaje Regional Development Committee, Patrick Ehinmola commended CNL for funding the GMoU and ensuring its success over the years.

The Delta State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Patrick Mrakpor and Pastor Edmund Akintunde of Ondo State, both representatives of their State Governments, commended the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture for implementing the GMoU and successfully kick-starting the GMoU Plus, which is in-line with the Federal and State Governments’ agricultural policies geared towards diversification from over-dependence on crude oil as well as gas.
