The Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Hon. Konbowei Benson has allegedly admitted his involvement in corrupt practices in the past, which contributed to payroll fraud in Bayelsa State, Our Bayelsa State Correspondent reports.
Hon. Konbowei who reportedly mounted the podium in a meeting between the State Government and stakeholder at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Yenagoa said in 2007 he got a call from the then Commissioner, Local Government Commission requesting for nominees and he gave them two.
The Lawmaker said he felt that the nominees were for appointment but later discovered it was an employment with a backdated appointment letter.
Konbowei disclosed that the verification exercises conducted in the past, by the administration of Governor Sariake Dickson has not yielded any positive result due to the fact that when top
civil servants retire, the authorities will inject junior cadre in the payroll with new names.
He called on all civil servants, starting from Directors to Permanent Secretaries amongst others to follow suit in admitting their involvement and desist forthwith.
Earlier in the meeting, Governor Dickson launched a newly introduced policy of 'no work no pay' emphasizing that any civil servant who absent his or herself from work for two to three days will be sacked.
Dickson said in a beat to sanitize the payroll structure of the State for better service delivering, there will be a secret monitoring team to go round and check those who do not go to work.
