The Itsekiri National Youth Council, INYC has petitioned the Director, Department of State Services, DSS over the controversial arrest of a Marine Transporter, Mr. Shola Akurene by armed men suspected to be officers of DSS who stormed his Warri residence March 3, 2017 and whisked him to an unknown destination.
The Itsekiri apex youth body in the petition dated March 14, 2017 entitled, “The continuous detention of Mr. Shola Akurene by officers attached to the office of the Department of State Services (DSS) Abuja-Request for the conditional and/or unconditional release on bail of Mr. Shola Akurene from the custody of the DSS”, stated that all attempts by family and friends to have access to him or to ascertain his present condition “has been deliberately repelled and /or refused by the officers in-charge of the investigations”.
While declaring that Akurene has also been denied medical and legal visitation by his doctor as well as lawyer, INYC through its solicitor and advocate, F.O. Olokor & Co, viewed the action of the DSS as “a breach of his basic rights as a citizen of Nigeria as guaranteed by the 1999 constitution as amended”.
They noted that Mr. Shola Akurene who is the Director of Shoren Nigeria Enterprises, is an Itsekiri from Erigbo Community in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State and as such “does not engage in criminal activities”.
INYC alleged that Akurene’s continuous detention is the handiwork of some of his competitors in business and vowed to stand with him at “this moment of trial and clear oppression”.
