Avweromre stresses DTHA charge on LG Chairmen to Revalidate taskforce against open grazing


The Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Area, Dr. Lucky Avweromre, has stressed the charge by Delta State House of Assembly, DTHA, on Local Government Chairmen across the state, to revalidate and start implementing the law against open grazing, through the committees that were constituted in various local government councils.

Our Ughelli South Bureau Chief, reports that Dr. Avweromre, made the disclosure Monday December 2, during a briefing at the Exco Chambers in the Council Secretariat.

The Chairman, noted that all the chairmen and committee members in the twenty-five local governments, were given a deadline of December 10, to fully implement the law enacted by the State House of Assembly.

He explained that the essence of the meeting was basically to have interaction between the committee members, law enforcement agents and the herders.

Dr. Avweromre, who disclosed that one of the cardinal agenda of his administration is peace and security, said he will stop at nothing to have a lasting and permanent solution to the incessant clash between farmers and herders in the local government.

"No individual is allowed to sell land to cattle owners and it is imperative that every cattle owner, register their cows with the local government as the taskforce is set to commence work without delay", the Council Boss, emphasized.

The Head of Personnel Management of Ughelli South Local Government Council, Chief Austin Emaduku, who incidentally was the Acting Chairman when the committee was inaugurated, more light on the law.

According to Chief Emaduku, the law was passed in 2021and it prohibits open grazing, saying no one is permitted to allow livestock be at large and offenders are of the law, are liable to pay fines or serve jail terms as the case may be.

He added that livestock, are not allowed to be moved on foot, but inside vehicles if need be.

He went further to state that the law permits Councils to provide ranches for the cattle, so that there will be no excuse for cows to wander around.

In the same vein, the Divisional Police Officer of Ughelli South Local Government, CSP Ishaku Banawi, said they have received lots of report from farmers, complaining of how cows have destroyed their crops and farmlands.

He commended initiative of the State House of Assembly, for enacting the law, saying if well implemented, it would bring lasting solution and restore peace in areas, where farmers and herders have been having problems.

Fresh Angle International, can report that a subcommittee headed by Secretary to the Local Government, Chief John Ewenede, was inaugurated by Dr. Avweromre.

 

The subcommittee whose responsibilities are to identify and register cattle owners, also have the following members; Otuya Lucky; Secretary, a representative of the police, DSS and the Chairman of Butchers Association in Ughelli South and Deacon Micheal Paive.
