Overall winner of the 2025 NDLEA Inter-School Essay Competition, 15-year old McCarthy Oritsetseyigbemi Jessy, says she missed a lot of classes and tests while trying to perfect the essay, which won her the prestigious award.

While dismissing the application of Artificial Intelligence, AI in putting the essay together, the Warri-born teenager said she did most of her research manually, using books, dictionaries and other textual materials.

She told the ecstatic gathering: “The essay I wrote, was actually more of a letter — letter to my future self and why I chose not to do drugs. I wrote the letter not only to myself, but to the youths of today.

When they read that essay, I want them to realize they have a better future and a better life. So, they should not venture into drugs and spoil that future, which God has put in place for them.
