The member representing Warri South Constituency I in Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Augustine Uroye, has advised youths in Warri South Local Government Area to enhance their academic status or learn skill, saying artisans make more money abroad than graduates.

Fresh Angle International’s Vivian Pori, reports that Hon. Uroye gave the advice in Warri, Delta State, Saturday July 5, during the celebration of the 100days of office of the Comr. Destiny Tuoma Noritsegho’s leadership of National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Warri South Chapter.

Hon. Uroye, a former Chairman of Transition Committee in Warri South Local Government, admonished the youths to take advantage of computer training and other trades, particularly the empowerment programme just launched by the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Warri South Chapter.

Whilst stating that Any youth who has identified with Warri South must raise his/her head high, the lawmaker, told the youths: “Now that you have everything available with you, if you don't package yourself to take it, it's your problem. Everybody must not be University graduate.

“Traditionally, they say the man that gives, his hand is always on top. Build yourself to that level. If you are a tailor, an electrician, a carpenter, do your work and people will come to you.

“There is nothing like handwork, the people that earn more money abroad are those with handwork and not the graduates. Today there are computer training and other trades everywhere, make use of the opportunity.

“Put yourself together, have a focus and say I want to be like this. You have the energy now, by the time you get to our age, when responsibilities start hitting you, you will understand, you won't have the energy you have now.

“I want to appreciate this gathering because you can't know it all. And once there is youth body, if government wants to talk because government knows the strength of youth, they will come to you.

“If you are serious with this body and identity with this body, you will sit and things will come to you. If the Local Government wants to do anything, they will come to you. If the State Government wants to do anything they will come to you. If Federal Government wants to do anything they will come to the youth.

“If the youth can come together to get themselves committed to this body, the benefits will be yours. We leaders, old people at our level will always fall back to you.

If you don't put yourself together, we will look for other options where we can get our support from.”

Renowned Warri-based Christian Cleric, Rev. (Dr.) Justin C Okoroji Jnr., who also spoke during the colourful ceremony, averred: “I am excited, because we are taking the right step in the right direction. The right step in the right direction, because we raise vibrant youth that can stand the test of time anywhere in the world.

“I just got a message today that a student of Delta State won a global debate. If we can read about other people, we can also read about you. I am going through memory lane to let you know that I know the things you are going through.

“I was a footballer; I played for Enyimba football club. I have come to the conclusion that there is no tomorrow.

“Youths are leaders of the now. Do not let anyone tell you that education is a scam. If education is a scam, I will not be here as your patron. Knowledge is power.

“If I had looked down on myself, I would not have been here. You have some potential in you. Positive potential that needs to be harnessed and developed. After this meeting, greater exploit will be your portion.

“I want to pledge my continuous support to NYCN, Warri South Chapter, as long as there is blood in my veins.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Warri South Chapter, Comr. Destiny Noritsegho, explained: “These 100 days have been both challenging and rewarding. Together, we have laid foundations for a Council that is proactive, inclusive, and impactful. I am proud to share some of the key milestones we have achieved in this short but significant period.

“Firstly, we officially flagged off the creation of a comprehensive database for community youth in Warri South. This initiative is crucial, as it will enable us to identify the needs of our youths accurately, plan targeted programmes, and ensure that no one is left behind in our developmental efforts.

“Secondly, we launched the NYCN Warri South Empowerment Scheme. Through this scheme, we have begun empowering young men and women with skills, resources, and opportunities that will improve their livelihoods and help reduce unemployment and social vices in our communities.

“Another significant stride is the inauguration of key Directorates to expand the scope of our work. We are to inaugurate the Directorate of Media and Publicity to enhance our communication, keep our youths informed, and showcase the good works of the Council. Equally important, is the establishment of the Directorate for Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWD), ensuring that our brothers and sisters living with disabilities are fully included in all youth development programmes.

“We also have the NYCN Warri South office ready for commissioning, thereby creating a central and accessible hub for youth activities, engagements, and administration. This office stands as a symbol of our commitment to service and transparency.

“Moreover, we will conduct the official inauguration of the NYCN Students Wing, integrating the energy and ideas of our vibrant students into the mainstream youth movement. “Their inclusion ensures that the voice of students is heard and that their unique challenges are addressed.

“We are expanding our support network through the official induction of our patrons, who have pledged to work with us and provide guidance, mentorship, and support as we carry out our mandate.

“Finally, in a spirit of unity and social impact, there will be a novelty match between NYCN and inmates of the Warri Correctional Centre. Beyond sports, this initiative was designed to foster hope, social integration, and rehabilitation for inmates, emphasizing that they remain part of our society with potential for positive change.

“These milestones are only the beginning. Our journey ahead is long, but with unity, vision, and determination, we shall build a youth council that truly serves the interests of all young people in Warri South.

“I extend my profound appreciation to my executive members, all stakeholders, our patrons, community leaders, and the youths of Warri South for your immense support and commitment so far.

“As we look to the future, I invite all youths to remain engaged, innovative, and dedicated to building a peaceful, progressive, and prosperous Warri South.”
