Residents of Akwaukwa Area in Okpanam near Asaba International Airport, Oshimili North local government area of Delta State have protested over the arrest of an alleged notorious terrorist, one Maxwell Okonkwo Ezechie by Policemen from zone 5 in Benin-City, Edo State, Fresh Angle can authoritatively report.
It was gathered that the alleged terrorist, Maxwell Ezechie who is a land speculator was arrested based on petition written to the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar by a renowned media house, Vanguard Newspaper, Lagos. The petitioner had alleged in a petition titled “attempted murder, kidnap, terrorism, harassment, intimidation and threat to life against the suspect, (Maxwell Ezechie)” that he and his thugs invaded a building located at Okpanam and unleashed mayhem on workers sent to do some work on the dispute land.
According to the petitioner (Vanguard Newspaper), the suspect led thugs armed with dangerous weapons, including guns, cutlasses and broken bottles to invade the parcel of land allocated to the media house by Delta State Government.
In a swift response however, leader of the protesters, Nwanendi Okafor declared that the accusation leveled against the suspect and published in Vanguard of Thursday October 11, 2012 headlined, “Police arrest notorious terrorist in Delta” was not true. He stressed that a duplex erected on the controversial land with approved plan was allegedly demolished by Vanguard Media Link, Publishers of Vanguard Newspaper in conjunction with the Delta Sate Ministry of Lands, Surveys and Urban Development without notice from the appropriate quarters.
Another protester, Morgan Kelechukwu said the allegation against Maxwell Okonkwo Ezechie was a calculated attempt to malign his reputation.
He explained that the matter has been investigated by the Delta State Police Command and they were informed that the matter is in a high court at Akwukwu Igbo, Delta State.
In a chat with Our Correspondent, younger brother to the alleged terrorist, Chukwuka Ezechie, noted that since the dispute on the land, his brother, Maxwell Ezechie has been allegedly beaten up severally by agents of Vanguard Newspaper, stressing that there is no document to show that the Delta State government or Vanguard Newspaper owns the disputed land.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Charles Muka had told Our Correspondent that the matter is being handled by police in Zone 5, Benin-City, Edo State.
