Delta State University, Abraka, on Saturday held its 2025/2026 Matriculation Ceremony for newly admitted students at the Convocation Arena, Site III, Main Campus.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Asagba, congratulated the students for successfully scaling the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the Post-UTME screening exercise.

He disclosed that out of tens of thousands of applicants, only 9,498 candidates secured admission into the university.
Giving a faculty breakdown, he said 171 students were admitted into Agriculture, 804 into Allied Health Sciences, and 952 into Arts.
Basic Clinical Sciences admitted five students, while 731 gained admission into Basic Medical Sciences and 131 into Clinical Sciences.
The Faculty of Computing admitted 340 students, while Communication and Media Studies received 633 students.
Dentistry admitted 10 students, Education 1,385, Engineering 592, and Environmental Sciences 21.
Management Sciences admitted 1,100 students, Law 118, Pharmacy 114, Science 1,736, and Social Sciences 660.
Professor Asagba reminded the students that they were privileged to be among the successful few admitted into the institution.
He revealed that The Times Higher Education 2026 ranking placed DELSU as the fourth best state university in Nigeria and 12th overall nationally.
The ranking also recognized DELSU as the best state university in the South-South and South-East geopolitical zones.
He attributed the university’s steady rise to strong town-and-gown relations and a tradition of academic excellence.
The Vice Chancellor credited the sustained support of the Delta State Government for the institution’s achievements.
He noted that DELSU currently has 17 faculties and 109 academic programmes.
The university also runs an Institute of Education and a Business School located in Asaba.
According to him, all academic programmes presently enjoy full accreditation status.
He assured that management is introducing more robust programmes to meet contemporary academic demands.
Professor Asagba urged the students to remain diligent and focused throughout their academic journey.
He warned them against becoming captives of social media, describing it as a subtle distraction and time stealer.
The Vice Chancellor cautioned against violence, cultism, internet fraud, and acts capable of breaching campus peace.
He further advised the students to shun examination malpractice, indecent dressing, and other vices.
“As first-year students, you must deliberately protect your esteemed gown from the hostilities of the town,” he said.
He urged them to pursue their dreams with integrity and discipline.
Professor Asagba appreciated the Executive Governor of Delta State and Visitor to the University, Sheriff Oborevwori, for his administration’s developmental strides.
He assured that the university would continue prudent management of resources in pursuit of excellence.
The highlight of the ceremony was the administration of the matriculation oath by the Registrar, Mrs. Rufina Ufiofio.
