Delta Assembly’s Show of Shame on DESOPADEC

Those who always say “Delta no dey carry last” should by now be thinking  of a better expression as far as political happenings in Delta State is concerned. Barely a month after Delta State House of Assembly controversially dissolved the Board of Delta State Oil  Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC “for non performance” the same House has unsurprisingly gone ahead to ratify the reappointment of not less than 2/3 of members of the sacked board, including its chairman, Mr. Oritsua Kpogho.

Your soar away monthly tabloid, Fresh Angle Newspaper was the only media to openly report the action of the House viewed by majority of Deltans as open admittance of failure by the three arms of government in Delta State, particularly against the backdrop of the same House earlier adjourning sine die (indefinitely) vowing not to resume sitting until all contractors handling major projects in the state go back to site and complete their projects. They declared that they could not face their constituencies as a result of lack of infrastructural development across the 25 local governments in the state, only for the same House to make u-turn and resume sitting while projects for which they went on indefinite strike remain incomplete till date. In fact, immediately the State House of Assembly announced the recent dissolution of the board of DESOPADEC, a commissioner in the dissolved board (name withheld) who has been reappointed told the media that the lawmakers are asking for contracts in the commission without being ready to follow due process.

Speculations are rife that the actions of the State House of Assembly which brings to question its credibility, is as a result of building of political structure as 2015 elections draw nearer.  The questions that now agitate the mind of Deltans are: Has the State House of Assembly suddenly discovered that members of the reappointed board actually performed or is the House telling Deltans that it has compromised its earlier stance? Only time will tell, but the seeming lack of direction by the executive and legislature in Delta State is further widening the gap between the state government and a vast majority of Deltans!
