Constitutional Amendment: Uduaghan, Ogbebor kick against template approach
Dr. Uduaghan Chief Ogbebor

Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, renowned Itsekiri rights’ activist, Chief Rita Lori Ogbebor were among a cross section of key stakeholders in Warri Federal Constituency that spoke against the questionnaire template printed by the National Assembly in its renewed move to amend the 1999 constitution.

Their discontent was brought to the fore Saturday November 10 at the Federal Government College, Warri during the House of Representatives Peoples’ Public Session on the review of the 1999 Nigerian constitution.

Dr. Uduaghan who commended the House of Representatives for “involving the grassroots” in the process of the constitutional amendment, called for open hearing of stakeholders before the House commences debate on the review of the 1999 constitution rather than relying on the prepared template which almost caused a rowdy session at the public session which started 2pm as against the 10 am simultaneously fixed across the country by the leadership of the House of Representatives. The shift in time is as a result of President Goodluck Jonathan’s visit to Word of Life Bible Church in Warri to join the President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor who celebrated his birthday the same day.
Renowned Itsekiri activist, Chief Rita Lori Ogbebor who also angrily spoke against the questionnaire template approach, condemned the 1999 constitution “for not taking care of the minority interests”, a situation which according to her is the cause of “the various ethnic conflicts in the country”.

A Warri Chief and business tycoon, Chief C.D. Ikomi requested for time to study the template before answering the questions due to the sensitive issues surrounding constitutional amendment.

Convener of the public session and member Representing Warri Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Hon.  Daniel Reyenieju described the session as the first in terms of broad approach towards constitutional amendment. Hon. Reyenieju who spoke extensively on the PIB and the need for people of his constituency to make input, said nation building is an endless process which requires contributions from everyone.
Fresh Angle can report that Chief Emmanuel Okumagba, Chief Israel Abido, prominent Itsekiri Chiefs as well as politicians were among key stakeholders in the constituency that attended the brief session.
