Ban on Okada: Commuters groan in Warri, Effurun as transport fare increases

Commuters in Warri and Effurun are groaning as cost of transportation bites harder following the ban of commercial motorcycle operators in the twin cities and Asaba, the Delta State capital, Our Correspondent reports.

It’s been four weeks since the state government effected the ban on commercial motorcycle operators, otherwise known as okada and commuters are wondering when their sufferings will end. Tricycles on the road are not enough and taxis too have capitalized on the situation to hike their prices.
One of the commuters who identified himself as Okiemute in a chat with Fresh Angle described the ban as “not only insensitive but also wicked”.
He accused the state transport ministry of “planlessness and foul play” in the handling of the issue, tasking the ministry to think of ways of ameliorating the situation or face the curse of the suffering masses in the state.

According to him, rather than release all tricycles on the street, some government officials and their cronies shared the tricycles to themselves with the intension of distributing them at very exorbitant prices.
He added that a popular politician now turned pastor in Warri (name withheld) has a large number of tricycles parked in his “domain”, just as he quipped that it could not be ascertained if the cleric bought the tricycles or it is his share of the booty.

In another development, a near altercation between officials of a voluntary organization, Eagle Chaplain Corps of Nigeria and a female police Inspector identified simply as Tina serving with the “B” Division of Nigerian Police in Warri was on Monday November 19, averted along Okere market road, Warri, Delta State at about  6.pm.
An officer of the Eagle Chaplain Corp who identified himself as Emmanuel told Our Correspondents that trouble started when the female police officer tried to beat traffic following serious hold-up, but she was stopped by 3 Eagle Chaplain Corp officers controlling traffic and the female corps immediately gripped him (Emmanuel). The female police officer who was on mufti reportedly came out from her green Toyota Sienna car (space bus) with registration number DT.433 SKL, gripped Emmanuel and tore his uniform.
Our Correspondents report that it took the intervention of Emmanuel’s colleague to bring the situation under control.
