The Administrator of Lokoja Local Government Area in Kogi State, Mr. Shiru Lawal has raised concern over the abysmal performance of students in both internal and external examinations in Lokoja, just as he expressed his administration’s resolve to change the state of education in the area.
Our Kogi State Correspondent reports that the Local Government Boss raised the concern while flagging off a free holiday lesson program in the local government area.
He said, “this administration is therefore poised to change the ill-ranking of our local government from the hitherto educationally disadvantaged, largely informed by the abysmal performance of the students in both internal and external examinations to a First Class educationally advantage local government”.
"You will agree with me that, the poor performance of our students in WASSCE, NECO, NABTEB, and JAMB in recent years leaves very much to be desired and had denied them opportunities to gain admission into higher learning institutions to improve themselves educationally. This unwholesome development is not only worrisome but a disgrace to the local government." Shiru added.
As parts of steps taken by the council to reverse the ugly trend, five centres were earmarked for the holiday lesson, taking into cognizance proximity and convenience for the teachers and students. The centres are: Local Government Secondary School, Kabawa, Bishop Delise College, Local Government Secondary School, Felele, St. Luke's Primary School, Adankolo and Muslim Community Secondary School Lokongoma.
The administrator outlined steps so far taken by his council towards fulfilling the mandate to include scholarship program, purchase of school uniforms as well as procurement and distribution of text books.
