AFCON 2013: The Men who can save Keshi’s blushes, by Anthony Ebule

As the 2013 African Cup of Nations draw nearer, majority of soccer fans across Nigeria have little or no confidence on the nation’s senior national team, the Super Eagles winning the elusive AFCON trophy for the third time, let alone making appreciable impact at the tournament despite Stephen Keshi’s questionable optimism.

Despite the obvious lack of belief, majority of soccer loving Nigerians have in the Super Eagles, your best read community tabloid takes an analytical look at four Super Eagles stars that can make a difference in South Africa come January 2013.

Ikechukwu Uche:
Ikechukwu Uche, the younger of the Uche brothers has been Nigeria’s best goal poacher in the last five years.
Ike Uche as he is fondly called is quick, skillful, technically gifted and unassuming.
The interesting thing about Ike Uche is that even when his club form is below average, he always delivers whenever he wears the green and white jersey for Nigeria, many thanks to his unalloyed commitment.

Obafemi Akinwumi Martins
This ex Inter Milan, Newcastle and current Levante striker is one of the quickest front-men Nigeria has produced in the last decade. Martins’s eye for goal and obvious lack of frustration whenever he is not scoring for both club and country makes him a dangerous customer for opposition defenders.
His natural talent makes him good enough to play on any side of a 3-man pronged attack. Little wonder he is nicknamed “weapon of mass destruction” and his resurgence at Spanish club, Levante makes him a must for Stephen Keshi if the Super Eagles gaffer intends making any impact at AFCON 2013.

Peter Osaze Odemwingie:
But for his National team commitment that has been brought under intense scrutiny in recent times, Edo born Osaze Odemwingie remains the most consistent Nigerian striker for club and country in the last few years. He is versatile, pacy, skillful, aerially strong and a prolific goal scorer. Osaze can play behind two strikers or strike from the flanks.

Joel Obi:
Despite recent injury that kept him out of Inter Milan side for weeks, Joel Obi can best be described as Super Eagles biggest discovery in the last 2 years. He is technically gifted to block the hole in Eagles midfield as well as provide creative and incisive passes for the team’s fast men forward.
He is so vast that he can equally play in left back. Joel is a must for Stephen Keshi considering his raw talent, skill and experience.
