A heavy downpour accompanied by a violent rainstorm has wreaked havoc in Bomadi, headquarters of the local government area, destroying some buildings including installations belonging to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN.
Our Bomadi Correspondent reports that the 3 hour rain which later turned violent de-roofed more than 2 buildings at Korobiri Quarters in Bomadi, exposing their household property to the rain.
The storm being the first in the year, some described as being early did not spare the PHCN installations as four concrete electric poles on a stretch were pulled down by the storm.
Residents of the affected buildings were seen thanking God for sparing their lives as they move away their household property to safer places, just as on-lookers trooped out to sympathize with them.
One of the owners of the affected buildings, Chief Alfred Obi described the incident as “huge damage”. He explained “I was sleeping in my second building when I was woken up by the vibration and heavy fall from the electric pole that fell close to my house. I thank God there was no casualty among my tenants who were in the house when the storm struck”.
The occupant of the affected building was too terrified to speak to Fresh Angle as she was under trauma. However, there was no casualty or lose of life as at press time.
In a related development, some residences of Ayama Quarters in Bomadi Town have been flooded following a 3 hour downpour, which rained cats and dogs. The residents who were astonished by the rain-water flooding their houses were looking stranded when the rain subsided.
According to the victims of the January flood “we simply can not do anything about the situation. Our houses have been flooded in the month of January. This is unusual”.
While some affected residents who spoke to Fresh Angle blamed government for the lack of good drainage system to channel the water after rain, others were busy bailing water from their houses as well as ensuring that their property are not destroyed by the flooding.
The flooded residents who described the situation as disappointing called on the state and local governments to urgently address the parental flooding in Bomadi by constructing a system of good drainage network to channel water away after rainfall.
In the meantime, the Transition Committee Chairman of Bomadi local government council, Mr. Collins Olorgun has visited the storm affected areas with a call on victims to remain calm as his administration is poised to tackle environmental issues in the local government area.
Mr. Olorogun who was at the scene of the incident for an on-the-spot assessment of the damage, sympathized with the affected residents, saying” they should see it as an act of God” describing it as “natural disaster”. He disclosed “I have already discussed with officials of PHCN in a bid to restoring electricity to the area, which has been thrown into darkness as a result of the damaged line. So I want you to remain calm as efforts are being made to light up the affected area”.
Responding, Chief Alfred Obi thanked the Council Chairman for the quick response to the plight of the people.
Meanwhile, Mr. Olorogun has declared that he has directed the environment department to urgently pull its energies toward opening up silt drainage to allow free flow of water.
