14-year old victim of okada accident faces disability

A fatal Okada accident along the Kpakiama-Bomadi road which occurred recently involving a sachet water carrying truck and a commercial motorcycle operator may render its female victim permanently disabled, Our Bomadi Correspondent reports.

The female victim, Gloria Bright, a fourteen year old JSS 3 student is said to be receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital after her kneel cap pulled out exposing her bones, while the commercial motorcyclist sustained serious injuries.

According to an eye witness, the vehicle and the okada were travelling in the same direction from Bomadi towards Kpakiama when the okada rider initiated a dangerous overtake. The source further stated that the accident occurred when the Okada suddenly veered back to his lane on sighting an oncoming vehicle close to them while on top speed, a move that caused collusion with the sachet water carrying truck.
As at press time, there was no loss of life. However, when newsmen visited the clinic where the Okada rider is being treated of fractured bones and severe body wounds, the 18-year old okada rider was lying unconscious.

Meanwhile, the squad leader Unit 9 of the Federal Roads Safety Commission , FRSC, Special Marshal Partnership, Chief Godwin Maze has described the accident as unfortunate, saying it is an act of recklessness, inexperience and ignorance of traffic regulations.
Speaking to journalist via mobile phone, the squad leader while hailing the state governor, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan for extending the ban of commercial motorcycle to other towns like Kokori in Ethiope East local government area remarked that Bomadi is still an emerging city with no extensive road network to ply buses and tri-cycles at commercial level.

He therefore pledged the commission’s commitment to continue its sensitization campaign to ensuring that there is safety on the roads. Maze however advised road users plying Bomadi and its environs to always be patient and think safety when making any move while on the road, just as he warned them to desist from all forms of recklessness, violating traffic regulations and impatience, which he said “are the major causes of accident on our roads”.
