Flood Alert: Warri South commences clearing of drains

Authorities of Warri South local government have commenced the clearing of drains along major roads and streets in Warri and environs as part of strategies to ward off the flood threat.

The exercise is being supervised by the Transition Committee Chairman of Warri South local government, Dr. Augustine Uroye, his Vice, Mr. Dafe Ikpuri, Secretary to the Local Government, Mr. Eugene Ebisin, members of the local government transition committee as well as other key officials of the council.

Addressing newsmen shortly after monitoring the clearing of drains at Ogunu road, the Warri South council boss, Dr. Augustine Uroye  declared that the on-going evacuation of drains will be extended to the riverine areas of the local government with a view to ensuring free flow of water in natural waterways.

Dr. Uroye explained that the exercise which will be continuous until all drains in the local government are opened up is to compliment the opening up of canals already carried out by the state government in the area.

While noting that residents of Warri will be sensitized on the need to clear smaller drains in their areas to compliment the local government efforts, Dr. Uroye disclosed that his administration will strengthen the council special environmental taskforce to enable it implement the local government renewed vigour  on environmental sanitation aimed at ensuring a cleaner and flood free Warri South local government.

He warned that any resident of Warri who refuses to key into the environmental sanitation policy of his administration and fail to clean-up their drains will be sanctioned, stressing that members of the council’s special environmental sanitation taskforce will soon commence house to house as well as street to street inspection to ensure compliance.

Areas already covered by the on-going clearing of drains include Pessu, Stadium road, Ugboroje street by Essi Layout, McDermott road, Ogunu road, Edjeba, Ugbuwangue, NPA bypass by Ekurede Itsekiri, Okumagba Avenue by Estate, Apala as well as Fani-Kayode streets.

It would be recalled that the federal ministry of water resources and NIMET recently warned that 32 states, including Delta and over 140 local governments across the country will be hit by flood this year as a result of heavy rains.
