INEC yet to be notified months after lawmaker’s demise- Investigation
Late Omawumi Udoh

There are strong indications that since the death of the member representing Warri South Constituency 1 in Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Omawumi Beatrice Udoh, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC may not have been officially communicated, Fresh Angle International checks reveal.

Hon. Omawumi Udoh reportedly passed on at a London Hospital at about two months ago, with a couple of aspirants already indicating interest to succeed her in line with constitutional provisions, but it was not however clear why Delta State House of Assembly seems cold towards notifying INEC to conduct a Bye-Election to fill the vacant seat.

Legal practitioner and rights’ activist, Barr. Robinson Ariyo who spoke to Our Senior Correspondent on the issue in an exclusive chat, explained that it is incumbent on the late lawmaker’s family to formally communicate the Delta State House of Assembly, following which the State legislature will declare the seat vacant and subsequently notify INEC with a view to fixing date for the Bye-Election.

Barr. Ariyo who was the All Progressives Congress Warri South Constituency 1 Candidate in April 11, 2015 Governorship/House of Assembly polls, stated explicitly that the Electoral Act specifies that Bye-Election be conducted within 90 days for a vacant legislative seat, but that has not been the situation since the death of Hon. Udoh.

Political stakeholders in the constituency were not forthcoming on moves being made to address the apparent vacuum, even as lobby intensifies by potential aspirants.
