A Chieftain of the PDP and Coordinator of Delta Peoples Forum, Warri South-West Local Government, Ambassador Peter Odin has stressed the need for all stakeholders to stick to the gentleman agreement of power rotation between Ijaw and Itsekiri in Warri South-West local government area so as to sustain the prevailing peace in the area.
Ambassador Peter Odin who is also the Secretary of Bateren Community Trust in Warri South-West local government made the declaration in a statement made available to Newsmen in Warri, Delta State.
He averred, “It has become imperative to remind all stakeholders, particularly PDP leaders in the state of the gentleman agreement of one tenure chairmanship power rotation between Ijaws and Itsekiris of Warri South-West local government following reports that the immediate past elected Chairman of Warri South-West local government, Hon. George Ekpemupolo bought Chairmanship nomination form for the forthcoming October 25, 2014 local government election”.
The statement added, “when political stakeholders fail to respect gentleman agreement on power rotation and sharing they are giving room for crisis and distrust”.
Ambassador Odin posited that after George Ekpemupolo served his three-year tenure as chairman of Warri South-West and another Ijaw man, Rev. Sam Ken was appointed Transition Committee Chairman of the local government, “It is only logical that Itsekiri of Warri South-West local government have a shot at the council’s chairmanship position in the forthcoming local government poll based on the power rotation principle which made Hon. David Tonwe served a single tenure”.
The PDP Chieftain noted that the wisdom of PDP founding fathers in the state to maintain a power sharing agreement in Warri North and Warri South local government areas after the Warri crisis which “makes Itsekiri produce chairmen, Ijaw and Urhobo get the vice chairmanship slots respectively in the two local government should be sustained in the spirit of mutual respect,” stressing that “any attempt to abort the power rotation and sharing agreement in the three Warri local governments may spark off avoidable crisis in Warri.”
