Why we approved 86 innovation and enterprising Institutions – FG

The federal government says it approved the establishment of 86 innovation and vocational institutions across the country to meet the millennium development goals on education.

This was disclosed by the Minster of Education, Prof. Rukayat Ahmed Rufai during a 3-day workshop on flexible skill development in Nigeria held at the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State.

The Minister who was represented by the Executive Secretary of National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, Dr. Masaud Kazaure, declared that the acceptability of flexible skill method of teaching would pilot the accessibility of technical and vocational education in Nigeria.

According to the minister, the technical education syllabus has been reviewed by the federal government in collaboration with the United Nation Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, to enable those who cannot acquire knowledge formally gain access to vocational training.

Speaking at the workshop, Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Dr. Philipa Idogho, stated that the prospect for a successful skill development is hindered by the challenges of “bandwidth and power”. Dr. Philipa Idogho whose institution is among the flag up schools in Flexible Skill Development, FSD, noted that Auchi Polytechnic has made FSD and ICT integration a significant institutional strategic objective.

According to her, Auchi Polytechnic has forty-two community learners who participate in Commonwealth of Learning, COL, global instructional network.

Fresh Angle gathered that the FSD programme is open to commonwealth countries and it is currently run in eleven higher institutions in 5 African countries, namely: Kenya, Gambia, Ghana, Tanzania and Nigeria.
