In what can be described as his first direct response to the controversy surrounding the use of his Bombadier Challenger 600 Aircraft with Registration No N-808HG to “illegally” transport $ 9.3m purportedly for the purchase of arms by the Nigerian Security Services, the National President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayodele Joseph Oritsejafor has hinged the brewing controversy on the forthcoming 2015 general elections, stating that those behind the saga “are trying to divide the church so that we can’t mobilize the Church”.
Pastor Oritsejafor who opened up for the first time at his church service in Warri, Delta State Sunday September 21 said it is one of several attempts to cause disharmony between President Goodluck Jonathan and himself in the build-up to the 2015 polls after previous efforts failed. “People have approached me to do something against Jonathan, but I refused. Jonathan is too good for Nigeria and he will win in 2015”.
Wife of Pastor Oritsejafor, Mrs. Helen Oritsejafor, while addressing members of the congregation earlier, declared that they suspect a conspiracy in the Presidency to set Pastor Oritsejafor against Jonathan, vowing that they will get to the root of the matter to ascertain why those responsible chose to use Pastor Oritsejafor’s hired jet to transport the cash presently being seized by the South African authorities.
According to Mrs. Oritsejafor, Eagle Air Company in which Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor holds a residual interest leased the Aircraft August 2, 2014 to Green Coast Produce Limited because of the cost implication of leaving it fallow when not in use, stressing that it is in line with global practice.
Since the news of $ 9.3m cash for arms broke out, there has been conflicting reactions, both within Nigeria and South Africa, with the Christian Association of Nigeria and aides of Pastor Oritsejafor absolving the CAN President of any involvement in the controversy.
