Warri based public affairs analyst and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Erefoluwa Keka, has urged governors of the 36 states, under the umbrella of Nigeria Governors' Forum, NGF, to obey the Abuja high court judgment on the regulations of local government councils' finance by the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU and drop any thought of appealing the judgment.
Keka, who spoke to select - newsmen in Warri, Delta State, Tuesday May 24, wondered why the governors instituted the suit in the first place, when, " they have consistently argued that they don't tamper with local government councils' allocations from FAAC."
" If the governors are sincere with their repeated and unconvincing claims that they rather augment alleged shortfall in allocations due monthly to the local government councils from the federation account, they should allow the NFIU perform its statutory function of regulating local government allocations from FAAC as it drops on the states and local government councils' joint accounts and strictly monitor onward movement of the funds to individual accounts of the 774 local government councils.
"Frustrating the efforts of the Federal Government through the NFIU to free local government councils' fund, so as to make that tier of government truly accountable to the public and provide effective grassroots governance, is akin to a father insisting that his grown - up children remain under his roof, when they are mature enough and desirous of going their separate ways to live independently," he posited.
While commending the resolve of President Muhammadu Buhari to eventually actualize full financial and administrative autonomy for local government councils in the country, the APC chieftain and community development advocate, enjoined Nigerians who genuinely believe in restructuring to support the ruling party's determination to truly make local government councils a tier of government.
