A retired athlete who represented the Nigeria Police Force at International competitions, Emmanuel Akpojowo, popularly known as Sapele, has called on both Federal and State Governments to increase the stipends given as allowance to athletes in order to bring out the best in them.
Mr. Akpojowo made the call at Otor-Udu in Udu Local Government Area during an exclusive chat with Our Correspondent.
The retired athlete who is currently training 28 police athletes at Ughelli, Delta State, noted that the allowance given to the athletes would enable them purchase their sports kits and other tools necessary for optimal performance.
He also enjoined the Federal and State Governments to support track and field competition in the grassroots, noting that it was through such competitions that international athletes like Chioma Ajunwa and Kate Esioge were discovered.
According to him, athletes should be camped a few months before any competition the way it is done for footballers so as to boost their confidence and make them put in their best.
