Grant us amnesty, prison inmates beg

Inmates of Warr Prisons, especially those on death roll have appealed to the Delta State Government to grant them amnesty or commit their sentences to jail terms, saying they have learnt their “lessons the hard way and turned a new leaf”.

The appeal was made on behalf of the inmates by their General Provost when wife of Delta State Governor, Mrs. Dame Edith Okowa, represented by wife of the State Deputy Governor, Engr. (Mrs.) Ebiere Otuaro led wife of Commissioners and Local Government functionaries to the Warri Prisons to celebrate her birthday with inmates of Warri Prisons.

Speaking earlier in the same vein, Deputy Controller of Prison, Sir Solomon Airiohuodion pleaded with the Delta State Government to look into the life of young and able bodied men and female in death roll with a view to removing “them from death roll and set them free or commune them to sentence so that their hope will come back to life and also to decongest the prison, whose capacity was originally 307, but today the lock-up is 1, 429”.

Sir Solomon Airiohuodion who is the Warden Boss In-Charge of Warri Prison appealed to Mrs. Okowa to assist in providing foams, blankets, drugs and generator to enable the prison authorities pump water for inmates’ use “as light is not regular in the prison”.

Our Correspondent reports that Mrs. Ebiere Otuaro, Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Hon. Matthew Mofe Edema and other top political leaders present at the ceremony which held at a hall inside the Warri Prisons, made strong commitments to alleviate the plights of inmates at the prison and ensure a more conducive environment for their rehabilitation/re-integration into the society.
