Fresh: NUT snubs Okowa, declares indefinite strike

Business

Despite continuous denial of local government workers in Delta State, particularly those in urban councils their monthly federal allocations with a view to pacifying teachers, the Delta State Council of Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, has slammed Governor Ifeanyi Okowa with an indefinite strike action.

The decision to declare the industrial action at the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum was reached Friday September 9 at Asaba, the state capital after an emergency meeting of the State Wing Executive Council, SWEC of Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT.

While commending the state Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for convening a stakeholders' meeting August 22 for amicable resolution of the issues, SWEC viewed “the non-implementation of the resolutions as deceitful”, hence can no longer compel teachers to "resume their professional duties on mere promises”.

In a communiqué released to Fresh Angle International at the end of the meeting, SWEC of NUT Delta State directed “all teachers in the state public primary and post primary schools to proceed on indefinite strike action until those legitimate demands are met”.

The communiqué which was signed by the State NUT Chairman, Comrade Jemirieyigbe J.O., State Secretary, Comrade Joe Iyalekhue and the State Publicity Secretary of the Union, Comrade Okogba A.L., listed their 11-point resolutions to include: immediate release of all promotions due since the year 2014 to 2016,payment of Teachers' Peculiar Allowance approved by Nigeria Governors' Forum, prompt as well as regular payment of primary school teachers' salaries, the need for SUBEB to immediately work out the financial implications of May/June 2015 consolidated salary and peculiar allowance arrears of primary school teachers so as to presenting same at the Joint Accounts Allocation Committee, JAAC for prompt action, the need for the state government to intervene by augmenting the payment with the balance of N89 million being May 2016 salary owed primary school teachers in five Local Government Areas in the state as well as the resolution that transfer of teachers in the state be put on hold till further notice.
