Warri South Local Government Council has begun clampdown on street trading with the demolition of illegal structures impeding traffic at major entrances to the ever-busy Igbudu Market, Warri.

Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Hon. Matthew Mofe Edema who coordinated the exercise, Monday February 13, noted that the council authority was determined to rid the streets of Warri of street traders, especially those who display their wares on top of drains, thus frustrating free flow of vehicular and human traffic.

Hon. Edema disclosed that members of Warri South Local Government Environmental Sanitation Taskforce will monitor the areas already cleared of street trading to prevent a re-occurrence.

The Warri South Local Government Council Supervisor for Environment, Mr. Kenneth George and the HOD of Environment, Mr. Solomon Umukoro supervised the demolition of shanties around Bazunu area, Igbudu Market by Hausa Quarters and the Ogbemudia Street Junction, where traders illegally displayed their wares by an electricity transformer and high tension line.

The Council Officials who were flanked by Policemen cleared off the transformer entry point of Ogbemudia Street and confiscated stationary trucks along the Warri Sapele Road by Igbudu Market.

They admonished people of the community as well as Market Union Leaders to ensure that the evacuated street traders do not return to the road.

Warri South Council Supervisor for Environment, Mr. Kenneth George in a chat with Newsmen, vowed that the exercise will be continous until street trading is eradicated in Warri.

Meanwhile, Hon. Edema has commended UNESCO and the Delta State Agency for Adult and Non- Formal Education for partnering his administration in the training of scores of persons in Fashion and Design, Hair Dressing, Computer Knowledge as well as Catering services.

The Warri South Council Boss explained that his leadership was poised to encourage the trainees, saying it will go a long way to support the efforts of the Federal and Delta State Government geared towards diversification of the economy as well as tackling recession.
