Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan says the ban on commercial motorcycle operators popularly known as okada in the state is not to witch-hunt anyone but to make the state crime free.
The governor gave the explanation Monday September 10 at the Government Office Annex in Warri when he played host to some commercial motorcycle operators.
Dr. Uduaghan who was represented by the State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Ben Iba, said his administration has procured 1,250 tricycles to cushion the effect of the imminent ban on commercial motorcycle operators in the state.
While noting that each tricycle will be given out to each beneficiary at the rate of two hundred thousand naira, Dr. Uduaghan explained that the state government intends to create about 7,000 jobs for the commercial motorcyclists by employing them as ticketing officers, drivers as well as train them as tricycle mechanics.
The President of Concerned Delta Okada Riders Liberty Forum, Comrade Ikolo Godwin described the ban on okada riders as a threat to the life of rural dwellers and appealed to the governor to extend the implementation of the ban from October 1, to a minimum of one year to enable the cyclists prepare adequately for the eventual take off of the new transport scheme being put in place by the state government.
