The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki has stressed on the need to run a National Assembly that is efficient and productive so as to eradicate corruption in Nigeria.
Dr. Saraki made the assertion in Lokoja, Kogi State Monday March 20 at a 5-day retreat for the National Assembly top management personnel.
Declaring the retreat open, the Senate President observed that an efficient and transparent National Assembly cannot be established without the support of the management.
He said, “it is important that we find a way forward to improve and create a National Assembly that can take us to desirable height. “The eight National Assembly has made economic reforms in the anchor of legislative activities so far. Notwithstanding there are greater task ahead and we need more support to achieve our objectives. We hope then this drill will further enable you and prepare you towards greater productivity. This is a chance for colleagues to get to know each other, and look with new eyes and opportunities the challenges in the year ahead"
The former Kwara State Governor wants leaders to accept that change has come not by words but by actions, tasking them to draw a line on how to do things differently for the development of the country.
The Senate President further stated, “as we all know this is a critical time for the Nation, we are going through difficult time, security issues, unemployment. The Nation looks up to the National Assembly for direction and provides opportunities for our people. It has become quite apparent to us that this is no longer business as usual.”
Earlier In his welcome address, the Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salihu Omolori said the retreat was designed to bring the management of the national Assembly together in a relax atmosphere in order to brainstorm in the direction of the nations legislators.
Meanwhile, Speaker House of Representative, Dr. Yakubu Dogara who was represented by Hon. Buba Jibril and the Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ahmed Imam both described the management staff as the backbone of any legislative chamber.
The five days retreat which is expected to end on Friday 24th March 2017 has the theme repositioning the National Assembly management for effective service delivery.
