Governor Ododo Surprises Workers with Leave Bonus, Reaffirms Commitment to Their Welfare-S A Labour matters

In a significant move aimed at reinforcing his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers, Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has approved the payment of leave bonuses to the state workforce — a gesture that has been described as both unexpected and commendable.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, Comrade Onuh Edoka, while addressing journalists in Lokoja, expressed profound appreciation for what he termed a “surprise gesture” from the governor. According to Edoka, the prompt payment of leave bonuses — despite not being part of labour’s current demands — demonstrates Governor Ododo’s genuine commitment to the well-being of the state’s workers.

“This is yet another clear indication that Governor Ododo is a promise keeper,” Comrade Edoka remarked. “Just recently, during the 2025 May Day celebration held in Lokoja, the Governor reiterated his dedication to workers’ welfare. He acknowledged workers as the engine room of government, and today, he has once again proven his words with action.”

Our Kogi State Correspondent, reports that the Special Adviser described the payment as a bold step towards cushioning the economic hardships being experienced by workers across the state. He added that such proactive measures are reflective of the governor’s experience as a former labour leader who understands the realities of the workforce.

“This payment is not only timely but also thoughtful. It came even when workers did not demand it, which shows the governor’s sensitivity to the plight of the people,” Edoka said. “His actions continue to demonstrate a new era of strategic planning, responsive leadership, and effective industrial relations in Kogi State.”

Comrade Edoka also acknowledged the roles played by other government officials in facilitating the payment. He extended appreciation to the State Auditor General, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, and other key stakeholders for their unwavering support.

“Their collaboration and commitment to the governor’s vision will never go unnoticed,” he affirmed.

He further assured that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) across the state will receive their bonuses in accordance with a clearly laid out schedule, noting that some have already started receiving the payments.

Edoka concluded by appealing to the workforce to reciprocate the governor’s goodwill with renewed dedication, loyalty, and productivity.

“The governor has done his part, and it is now the responsibility of workers to double their efforts. As the saying goes, to whom much is given, much is expected. Workers must rally behind the administration to ensure the success of its programmes and the re-election of Governor Ododo in 2027, by God’s grace,” he stated.

The leave bonus initiative has been widely praised as another milestone in Governor Ododo’s administration, which has consistently emphasized good governance, inclusive leadership, and worker-centered policies.
