The Federal Government has instructed vice-chancellors of federal universities throughout the nation to rigorously apply the "no work, no pay" policy to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities who are currently involved in the nationwide strike.
In a circular issued on October 13, 2025, and signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, a directive was observed by our correspondent.
The circular was distributed to several officials, including the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the Permanent Secretary of Education, the Pro-Chancellors of all federal universities, the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, the Accountant-General of the Federation, and the NUC Executive Secretary.
The circular noted that the Federal Ministry of Education has shown disappointment regarding the persistent strike by ASUU, even after numerous appeals for discussion. It emphasized that the government will no longer accept violations of current labor laws.
The circular reads: “In line with the provisions of the Labour Laws of the Federation, the Federal Government reiterates its position on the enforcement of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy in respect of any employee who fails to discharge his or her official duties during the period of strike action.”
