There is brewing controversy over the cause of an inferno which has rendered 8 families homeless at Oki Street in Warri, Delta State, Fresh Angle can exclusively report.
Our Senior Correspondent who was at the scene of the incident a few minutes to 6pm on the day it occurred (Saturday September 29) reports that the fire started few minutes before 4pm as a result of a female occupant of one of the rooms who was allegedly pouring kerosene in a gallon which supposedly triggered off a nearby electric fuse in a meter sparking at the same time.
An occupant in one of the rooms living with her parents, who identified herself as Franca said she was not around when the incident occurred, but told Fresh Angle that her younger sister hinted her that one of their neighbours who is a kerosene dealer was pouring the content in a gallon when suddenly the whole building was engulfed with fire.
Another occupant of the affected building who gave his name as Kesta Simon said their neighbour who sells Kerosene was pouring the substance into a container when it suddenly took over part of the building.
According to him, the incident occurred few minutes before 4pm. In a swift response however, husband to the kerosene dealer, Mr. Ellis Ishokare explained that his wife did not cause the inferno. According to him, there is a fuse by the side of the meter close to where his wife was turning kerosene into a gallon. But while “she was turning the kerosene, the fuse sparked off, fell down and the whole place caught up with fire. I quickly rushed out of the house to see how I and other sympathizers could put off the fire, but it was to no avail”.
When asked if the fuse has been sparking for sometime, Mr. Ishokare responded, “yes and it is not my wife’s kerosene that caused it”.
Eyewitnesses say before men of the Delta State Fire Service could arrive the scene, the fire had already caused devastating damage to household properties worth millions of naira. However with help of sympathizers and Delta State Fire Service, the fire was put off from causing further damages.
Our Correspondent could not speak with the kerosene dealer at the time of filing this report because she was stunned by the incident.
An attempt to speak with the landlord of the compound was unsuccessful as our Senior Correspondent was told that the landlord resides in far away Ubeji, Warri South local government.
