Delta Revenue Board to sanction firms over tax evasion
Joel-Onowakpo

The Executive Chairman, Delta State Board of Internal Revenue, DBIR, Mr. Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, has advised companies that are still indebted to the state government to pay up or face sanction, stressing that a fine of five million naira (N5,000,000.00) or three (3) years imprisonment or both awaits companies that have formed the habit of not verifying Tax Clearance Certificates, TCCs.

Joel-Onowakpo gave the advice at the 2nd Stakeholders Meeting of the State Board of Internal Revenue with companies and agencies operating in the state at Effurun, Delta State.  According to him, verification of tax clearance certificate is mandatory for companies doing business in the state.

He advised organizations that have not been doing so to have a rethink and ensure that they verify certificates claimed to have been obtained from the Board as there is no escape route for tax defaulters in the state.

He disclosed that the Board has concluded plans to tag companies indebted to the state government as criminals, with the intent of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to arrest chief executives of such companies.“Not paying your tax is a criminal offence. It is a financial crime. In fact in developed countries not paying your tax is as bad as committing murder. Some companies have decided to fight raw in a bid to be proactive towards tax evasion by taking us to court. But we are not going to relent in our effort at ensuring that we recover every kobo owned the state government. I want to appeal to companies owing the state government to pay up their liability. Clear whatever areas that need to be cleared. Companies indebted to the Delta State government will be tagged financial criminals and Directors of such companies will be handed over to EFCC for prosecution,” the DBIR Boss warned.
