A crème of seasoned civil engineers have identified poor quality control, lack of self confidence by some engineers as well as the attitude of members of the political class as major causes of building collapse and road failures in Nigeria.
They gave these reasons in Warri, Delta State, Saturday October 20 during the 2012 annual seminar organized by Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, NICE, Warri Chapter.
In a paper titled, “optimization of quality control in civil engineering works to achieve project objectives”, a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Engr. Paul Mbadiwe Igwe noted that failures of structures can be minimized when quality control is given adequate attention in the work process.
According to him, 1% investment in quality control cuts down cost of construction by up to 10%.
A former Head of Corporate Civil Engineering, SPDC, Engr. Chris Ekpekurede while noting that intelligence is a requirement for becoming an engineer, opined that many civil engineers in Nigeria are yet to become successful in their career due to lack of self confidence.
On his part, the National Vice Chairman of NICE, Engr. Owivry Robbie James who represented NICE National Chairman, Engr. A.A. Omopeloye, accused politicians of frustrating the efforts of Engineers across the country. According to him, non engineers head works department at the local government level, particularly in Lagos State.
The Warri Chapter Chairman of NICE, Engr. Joseph Eghwrudje in his opening address, explained that this year’s seminar with the theme, “promoting innovative and sustainable civil engineering practice in Nigeria” is intended to generate ideas “that would adequately address the challenges that will promote the practice of civil engineering in Nigeria”.
Highlight of the one-day seminar which was attended by engineering students from Delta State University, Abraka and Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro was the presentation of fellowship certificates and awards to some renowned civil engineers, including Engr. I.A. Ugiomoh and the immediate past chairman of NICE, Warri branch, Engr. (Mrs.) Nnoli Akpedeye.
