24 hours to the expected visit of President Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan to Word of Life Bible Church in Warri, officials of Delta State government at about 11a.m Friday November 9 demolished all shanties along NPA Expressway by Ugbuwangue for allegedly “defacing the environment”.
Though it was not clear as at Press time if the demolition has any relationship with the President’s visit to Word of Life Bible Church which is celebrating 25 years of existence, 40 years of ministry of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor as well as his birthday, there were however indications that the demolition which was supervised by armed policemen is not an isolated case.
Mr. Jerry Atiene, Special Assistant to Delta State Commissioner of Environment, Mr. Frank Omare who led the demolition team told Fresh Angle that the exercise was carried out “because the shanties are defacing the environment and the state government is set to beautify the place”. According to the Commissioner’s aide, traders doing business in the area had been given written notice to evacuate, but “they declined”.
One of the traders, who identified himself as Mr. Usman Hassan Sokoto told Our Correspondent that no official notice was given to them.
As at the time of filing this report, the affected traders, most of whom are Hausas selling tubers of yam, fruit and other consumables were seen moving their wares.
