THE recently renewed Global Memorandum of Understanding, GMoU between Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, Egbema/Gbaramatu Communities Development Foundation, EGCDF and the Delta State Government is now causing ripples in one of the communities.
In a press statement signed by Chief Jeffrey E. Ojogun, Chairman/Amadiwei of Benikrukru Community and the General Secretary, Fanty G. Wariyai, warned all those who signed the renewed GMoU to steer clear from all affairs of the community as their action did not get the backing of the entire community.
They also warned CNL to stop meddling in the affairs of Benikrukru Community in Warri South-West Local Government Area of oil-rich Delta State.
While accusing Chevron of trying to cause disaffection and disunity in the community, they threatened to mobilize women and children in the days ahead to cripple the Abiteye flowstation and other facilities of the company.
The statement reads in part; “We just rose from an emergency meeting at Benikrukru where we resolved that all those who participated in the signing of the renewed GMoU between the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture, Egbema/Gbaramatu Communities Development Foundation and the Delta State Government be sanctioned.”
According to the statement also; “They went ahead and signed the renewed GMoU with Chevron when we have told them not to do so; they are on their own as they did not attend the signing ceremony with the total support of our community of which they represent in the EGCDF and henceforth, we do not want them to transact any business in the name of our community again. These individuals had earlier gone ahead to register the IRDC at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) without the concept of the community.”
They made it clear that “We want to say that forging letter nominating persons from Oboro and Nei-Bralabor quarters is null and void as the peace-loving Benikrukru Community never instructed them to do so and we want to state that those that signed the GMoU are hereby sanctioned. This sanction also affects Pa John Ogio Okirika, the Amakosuwie of Benikrukru Community, who has been stripped of this position and now replaced by Pa Abaka from Nei-Bralabor quarters, this action also affect Rev. Emman Imeleye. Nobody should deal with the two of them anymore until further notice and the appointment of Rev. Imeleye in IRDC has been withdrawn forthwith.”
And they had a message for Chevron too, saying that; “Chevron is trying to cause disaffection and disunity in our community, the company must put a halt to all dealings with the affected persons so that our community will know peace. The appointment is being withdrawn by the community that has written several letters to Chevron which they failed to honour. We will no longer accept this divide and rule tactics from Chevron, enough is enough and a word is enough for the wise as we do not know the business of Chevron in the affairs of our community. We have also resolved to cripple the Abiteye flowstation and other facilities of Chevron in our area if they fail to stay away from the affairs of our community.”
