Police recovers corpses of four officers killed by militants in Delta State

Four of the Marine policemen killed by militants on Monday May 8 along the Benin River axis of Delta State were recovered by the search party along with their patrol without its 150 horse power outboard engine after Aruwun community.

The dead policemen who were simply identified as Aghoro (Commander), Sagay, Andrew and Mejer are currently lying at both Sapele and Warri General Hospital morgue, while the bullet riddled patrol boat that was sunk by the militants has been taken to Abiugborodo community under the care of soldiers at the military post.

Heavily armed militants at about mid-night allegedly invited the policemen led by Mr. Aghoro to come and collect money to pave way for them to carry out their illegal bunkering activities.

It was reliably learnt that against advice from well meaning persons not to proceed to the area, Mr. Aghoro took out the only patrol boat at their Sapele Marine Police Unit with four others and ventured into the sea at about 2:30am without a back-up patrol boat as ordered by the police authority that any patrol boat must have a back up before moving out for any operation.

Sources disclosed that on sighting a boat on the sea and having identified that they were the persons who invited them, the militants moved closer to the boat and opened fire on the officers, killing four of them with one, Mr. Ugbo swimming to safety with bullet wounds and currently recuperating at the Sapele General Hospital.

No group has however claimed responsibility for the gruesome murder of the policemen, even as the Sapele Unit Commander has been under arrest since the incident.
