The Transition Committee Chairman of Warri South local government, Dr. Augustine Uroye has described malaria as “a national health burden and a leading cause deaths of both infants and pregnant women” in Nigeria.
Dr. Uroye made the assertion Tuesday April 30 during the flag off ceremony of the local government Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINS) Universal Campaign held at the Warri South Council Sub Secretariat in Warri, Delta State.
The Warri South Council Boss, whose address was read by Secretary to the local government, Mr. Eugene Ebisin, expressed happiness that the programme will reach the riverine communities in the local government “where the burden of malaria is higher”.
He enjoined people of the area to participate and receive their share of the long lasting insecticide treated nets for use in their homes.
While pledging that his administration will continue to support health related programmes within the limits of her resources, Dr. Uroye commended the World Bank, National Malaria Control Programme and the Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency for the Universal Coverage Campaign.
In his opening remark, the Warri South Council Head of Primary Health Care Department, Dr. Elohor Taigbenu explained that officials of the council have already gone round the local government to give out net cards to different families to enable them get access to the free treated nets.
According to him, the council has already been divided into wards to ensure effective coverage, even as he noted that the LLINS is just one method of controlling malaria.
High points of the flag off was a practical demonstration of the use of the treated net via a play-let as well as the formal flag off of the programme by the Vice Chairman of Warri South Local Government Transition Committee, Mr. Dafe Ikpuri, Secretary to the local government, Mr. Eugene Ebisin, the Council’s Supervisor for Health, Mr. Kingsley Willobi, the Head of Personnel Management, Mr. James Kolo as well as Treasurer to the local government, Mr. Santos Ogobri.
