News of the death of Akpor Pius Ewherido, former two-time
Deputy Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly during Chief James Onanefe
Ibori administration and the member representing Delta Central Senatorial
district at the National Assembly took most Deltans, particularly his numerous
admirers by storm. While his death was
greeted with utter grief by the average Deltan, no matter the ethnic divide,
political pundits immediately went into social discourse to x-ray the political
implication of his death, as it affects the Democratic Peoples’ Party , DPP.
It is no longer news that late Ewherido who was until the
last general elections a key member of the ruling PDP in Delta State, was the
only DPP Senator at the National Assembly despite his romance with the newly
formed All Progressive Congress, APC.
Despite the DPP having pockets of members in the Delta State House of
Assembly, some of whose allegiance seems to be tilting towards the ruling PDP
after winning elections on the DPP platform, it is common knowledge that the
soul of DPP, which is more or less a Delta Central Senatorial district political
party rests heavily on the late Senator Pius Ewherido and the man often
referred to as the Peoples General by his avid supporters, Chief Great Ovedje
Ogboru. While the latter is rumoured to
be financially bankrupt and reportedly fell out of favour with the late
Ewherido over who controls the soul of the DPP, it appeared that the late
Ewherido who was obviously more stable financially may have concluded plans to
take most of his followers to the newly formed APC to enable him actualize a
purported 2015 gubernatorial ambition in Delta State.
Chief Great Ogboru’s decision according to reports to
distance himself from contesting the Delta Central Senatorial seat as a
possible replacement for the late Senator Ewherido may have created a loophole
for PDP to win that seat which their candidate, Chief Ighoyota Amori have
desperately craved for and possibly lead to the death of DPP, excerpt the party
largely seen as symbol of Urhobo nation convince Great Ogboru to have a
re-think.
