A member of the army crew who prefers anonymity told Fresh Angle that they were on routine patrol when they saw some policemen who allegedly collect money from the illegal bunkerers and stopped over on sighting the drums which looked suspicious.
According to the army personnel, on stop-over, the policemen close to the scene of where the diesel drums are stored left, while the owners of the drums ran away.
Fresh Angle gathered from another member of the army patrol team that today’s raid is one of several others carried out in Warri to check activities of illegal bunkerers whose operations is grinding the nation’s economy to a halt.
None of the bunkerers were apprehended, while the army patrol team ordered some Hausa youths who were passing by to destroy the drums, leaving the diesel to litter the surrounding.
Investigations reveal that despite the huge sums of money being paid to some ex Niger Delta Warlords as maritime security and pipeline protection contracts by the federal government, incidences of illegal bunkering has grown to an unprecedented level, with analysts saying that it is even worse than the pre- militancy era.
