The Peoples Democratic Party in Delta State Saturday October 31 suffered fresh deflation as a former Commissioner in the State under Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan administration and ex-President of Iwere Development Association, IDA, Comrade Omolubi Newuwumi dumped the party and formally joined the All Progressives Congress, APC with his political associates as well as supporters.
Addressing a large gathering of APC members at the Warri palatial home of Chief Ayirimi Emami, Comrade Newuwumi who is a renowned Itsekiri activist noted, “the past 16 years of PDP has not brought the desired development to Nigerians,” hence “I decided to dump PDP for APC to consolidate on the party’s change philosophy which I am a product of”.
The Delta South Chairman of APC, Prince Yemi Omaghomi in a remark, vowed that the party will take “the totality of the progressives in the PDP”.
He declared that former Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State, Senator Heineken Lokpobri of Bayelsa State and Chief Ayirimi Emami of Delta State are some of the progressives the APC has taken from PDP, even as he averred that “the APC leadership will do everything possible to win more than 90% of the votes in Warri Federal Constituency in subsequent elections”.
The Akulagba of Warri and Chieftain of the APC, Chief Ayirimi Emami who also spoke at the ceremony disclosed that several efforts were made to stop Comrade Newuwumi from joining the APC, noting that the decision by the former Commissioner to join the All Progressives Congress will solidify the party’s structure in Warri North Local Government Area and eliminate “negotiators” parading themselves as members of the party.
A former member of Delta State House of Assembly and immediate past Delta State Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Misan Ukubeyinje, who only recently defected to the APC opined that with the membership of Comrade Newuwumi and his supporters, the party will now “have enough force in Warri North Local Government Area as well as Warri Federal Constituency in general”.
Our Correspondent reports that APC stalwarts present at the ceremony included Gbaramatu leader, Chief Michael Johnny, former Secretary to Warri South-West Local Government Area, Mr. Victor Omunu and Comrade Progress Omo-Agege.
