Biometrics: NUT raises alarm over extortion of teachers by contractor

The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT has raised alarm that the contractor in-charge of biometrics of Civil Servants in Delta State, Hecherbella is demanding N8, 000 from each teacher in Warri South Local Government Area before they can be captured.

Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers, Warri South Chapter, Comrade Ishmael Confidence Ikuejawa who made the revelation in an exclusive chat with Fresh Angle International weekend in Warri, stated that about 30% of staff under the Post Primary Education Board, PPEB in Warri South Local Government Area were yet to be captured in the biometric exercise by the firm in-charge, Hecherbella because “they claimed the affected staff, most of whom have worked for over 20 years do not have file even though the PPEB insisted they do”.

It was learned that the alleged demand for N8, 000 from each of the secondary school staff is not unconnected with speculation that PPEB did not meet up with the deadline given them by the contracting firm to furnish them with the files of the affected staff.

The NUT further disclosed that PPEB staff in secondary schools in Warri who managed to get pin for the biometrics was purportedly induced to pay N3, 000 each to have their biometrics, stating that teachers have been asked not to pay money to anyone because they were not responsible for the alleged lapses of PPEB officials.

The Warri South NUT Boss, Comrade Ishmael Confidence Ikuejawa appealed to the Delta State Government to intervene so as to avert a situation where the affected teachers will not be captured in the biometrics thus declaring them ghost workers.

While noting that PPEB staff in the area is about 1,300, Comrade Ikuejawa enjoined Hecherbella to send text messages to teachers on the scheduled date and time of the biometrics in order for them not to be denied the opportunity.
