Erosion hits Ankpa College of Education
One of the places affected by the erosion

Erosion has ravaged most part of College of Education Ankpa, putting most erected buildings in the State at the verge of collapse.

The College which was established in 1981 and is the oldest Institution in Kogi State has failed to receive government attention since the State was created in 1991.

The Institution which is known for its leadership role in grooming future teachers with structures which are currently at the verge of collapse was built when Ankpa was still under the old Kwara State.

It was gathered that the Information Communication Technology Centre, Biology, Chemistry Laboratory, Fine and Applied Art, Technical Education Workshop which was built by Tetfund is currently under big threat because of erosion.

Almost 60 percent of the aforementioned building foundation has been eaten up by this ecological menace hence causing a great danger for staff, students and management of the institution.

Confirming the current state of the college, the acting Provost  College of Education Ankpa, Dr. Joseph Onimisi while addressing members of the Kogi State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Science and Technology during their oversight function said erosion has persistently posed serious threat to land infrastructure on campus especially the newly constructed building.

He said “ we have put in place several temporary measures to curtail it but, like a Hydra headed demon, it continues to sprout in different locations. Only recently we have tried without success to obtain a bulldozer in that respect for remediation work and contacted relevant stakeholders to no avail”.

While inspecting the extent of damage by the prevailing erosion in the College, the Chairman House Committee on Education AScience and Technology, Hon. Sanni Kekere representing Okehi Constituency lamented on the bad condition of the college, stressing that the State House of Assembly will liaise with the executive to address the challenges.

He assured the Management of Ankpa College of Education of continuous support through properly lawmaking in changing the face of the Institution which is currently In a dilapidated condition.

Also speaking, a member of the Committee, Sunday Shigaba described the Institution as the bedrock for any meaningful development, stressing that the present state of the college is disheartening.

Apart from erosion problem, the school is battling with poor funding, epileptic power supply, accreditation, staffing, encroachment of college land by Fulani herdsmen, and bad road network within and outside the campus.
