Transition Committee Chairman of Warri South Local Government, Dr. Augustine Uroye has admonished Nigerians not to limit their concern and commitment towards disabled gallant retired soldiers to the yearly celebration of Armed Forces Remembrance day, stressing that it is the only way to show genuine commitment to their well-being.

While noting that the yearly Armed Forces Remembrance Day is to celebrate the dead and the living retirees as well as those who suffered various deprivations of the first and second world wars as well as Nigerian Civil War, Dr. Uroye stressed that no meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of rancor and insecurity.

The Warri South Council boss who made the assertion during the 2014 Armed Forces Remembrance Day held at the Erejuwa playground in Warri Wednesday January 15, stated that it is in recognition of the efforts of our fallen heroes towards the peace and security of the country that this year’s celebration is tagged “Peace and Security, Hallmark of National Growth and Development”.

Chairman of Nigerian Legion, Warri South Area, Major R. E. Odudu (Rtd.) in an address appealed to the various tiers of government to consider the living war veterans in their various welfare scheme, particularly in areas such as housing, healthcare, loan for small scale business and out-right employment to ‘employable’ legionnaires.

While lamenting the 53% of pension increase arrears being owed to military pensioners for the past three years by the federal government, Major Odudu (Rtd.) appealed to stakeholders to contribute to the well-being of dependants of fallen heroes who made supreme sacrifice for the country.

Highpoints of the ceremony were the launching of emblem, March past and laying of wreaths by the Warri South Council boss, Dr. Uroye, representative of the Olu of Warri and Service Chiefs.
