As efforts continue towards strengthening the peace in Ugborodo, an Itsekiri community in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, the Warri Rebirth Initiative has called on members of the community to put behind them all conflicts and team up with the federal and state governments to ensure peace as well as speedy development of the area.
In a statement issued in Warri, Chairman of Warri Rebirth Initiative, Mr. Kes Agbosa and Publicity Secretary, Mr. Patrick Origho expressed shock that brothers turned against one another in Ugborodo, in the process unleashing pain and suffering upon themselves and other persons.
The statement reads in part, “members of the Warri Rebirth Initiative are unhappy about stories of violence, death and injury as reported in the media concerning our brothers and sisters in Ugborodo. Coming just a few days after we organized the Wafi 2013 fiesta we feel there is a compelling need to ask our people to follow the path of peace”.
The statement stressed that violence breeds hatred and causes destruction which negates the spirit of reconciliation, love and friendship that the group is working for in Warri.
It enjoined “contending parties in the Ugborodo matter to find a common ground for the peaceful settlement of their differences”.
It also thanked stakeholders, particularly Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, Chief Rita Lori-Ogbebor, the Nigerian Security Forces and all others who have in one way or the other made moves to reconcile parties in the crisis.
The statement added that the group is grateful to the federal government, “for citing the Gas City Project on the Atlantic fringes of Warri South-West Council Area”.
The statement further explained, “we envision a time when this project will provide employment opportunities for our teeming young Nigerians in Delta State and beyond. Nothing therefore should be done to jeopardize the take off, construction, completion and commissioning of this project which holds so much promise for developing the Nigerian economy as well as enhancing the peace and progress of Delta State”.
The Warri Rebirth Initiative was set up to find ways of restoring Warri and its environs to the spirit of love and friendship which transcends ethnic considerations.
